I am a father of two adorable daughters and married to my very caring wife who is an incredible mother to our children and teases me that I suffer from engineer syndrome.

I always had an intrinsic curiosity for the way things worked, which is why I enjoyed taking things apart when I was young and still enjoy doing so today. With this site, I will share all I have learned from collaborating with other people, conducting research from various sources and eventually teaching myself random, new experiences. The content shared throughout this site is a collection of my projects that continued to inspire me on my self-learning journey. I am choosing to teach you about my different interests and hobbies because it will allow me to continue to learn as well. Some of these projects include: computers micro controllers, creative projects, home improvements, photography, videography, life hacking and other random things that I have stumbled into.

I am passionate about building one of a kind solutions to quirky problems.  Yes, yes, I know, is it worth the time?  If we were to enter the debate about time for mundane task versus efficiency of task automation, I deliberate it all the time.  Sometimes it's just for the challenge, other times it is to help someone else out by making their task easier and more efficient. For example, like making Rube Goldberg machines out of tinker toys where most of my projects are on the fly bottom up approach.  It's like a practiced skill. The more inventive solutions you have fun building, the better at identifying what would be worth the time for automation and what is not. By the way I love XKCD!  I have this one printed out and hanging up on my wall.  https://xkcd.com/1205/

When the Student is Ready, the Teacher Will Appear …..

My education background is a little different.  When I was tested in school, the results revealed that I have a gifted IQ with a learning disability and that got me an Individual Education Plan (IEP). In the year of graduation, I requested that the school district withhold my diploma, so I could go back to school for a full year just to take shop classes. They approved my request and for a full year I learned the way that worked best for me, HANDS ON  πŸ™‚  I built my own video camera stabilizer that year.  I did attend 2 years of college, but that was not the right environment for me because it did not challenge in a way that was productive for me. I love learning and teaching myself by exploring ways that is more natural and constantly engaging a state of flow where my skill and the challenge intersect.

I like the concepts in CGP Grey’s Digital Aristotle: Thoughts on the Future of Education and how education is changing.  Since I like a self-paced way of learning, I use various sources such as audio books, Google, YouTube, documentaries and any other source of information. These sources can all provide great education value at little to no cost, so you will see them referenced frequently throughout my site. When I read or watch something to learn new skills and ideas, I find testing it for my self helps me learn in a much deeper way. Sometimes venturing into the vast unknown is the hardest part but once you build a small platform of knowledge, information will start to stick, until you develop a working knowledge on any topic. Critical thinking skills can also be improved because you are playing the role of student and teacher and not everything on the internet is true, so challenging the content is key.

I was 15 when I began teaching myself about computers and networking and started hanging out with friends that did the same. I have worked in the capacity of a Network Administrator for about 10 years before becoming the Manager of the MIS department for a 800+ person company. The manager role has been a challenge because it requires different skills but it has exposed me to other areas and projects where I can be a maker of a thing and a manager.

I love being an Information Technology Generalist being proficient in many things without any specific specialty. Finding purpose, mastery and autonomy for achieving intrinsic motivation and a state of flow creating solutions,  supporting coworkers, business needs, challenges, efficiencies, and improve current systems of a midsize agency.
